Ron Lott
Founder @SMART Recovery
Ron Lott majored in economics at the University of Houston after serving as a medic in the US Army. He spent the next 40 years as CEO of Lott Marketing, a sales and marketing agency in the foodservice industry. Ron has served on numerous boards of Fortune 500 food manufacturers, industry organizations, and private companies. After retiring in 2015, he began volunteering in the prison system for Bridges To Life. A year later, Ron found SMART Recovery and introduced our InsideOut® program to the Texas prison system, which has authorized this program’s use at all of its correction facilities. He co-authored, along with Charles True, Successful Life Skills, and has generously donated all proceeds from the book’s sales to SMART Recovery.

Joseph Gerstein, MD, FACP

After serving as a Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School and a Visiting Scholar at Stanford University, Dr. Joseph Gerstein developed and first implemented the unique SMART Recovery curriculum in the Boston area before founding a non-profit of the same name in 1994. Since then, he has personally facilitated over 3,400 SMART Recovery meetings—almost 800 in prisons and jails—and has invented several tools currently used in SMART meetings. The former professor has delivered over 100 lectures and workshops on SMART Recovery, including those given at the International Association of Addiction Medicine and Harvard Addiction Symposiums. He has been the keynote speaker at the Scottish Prison System Annual Conference, the first SMART Recovery Symposium in London, and other national and international venues. Dr. Gerstein also serves on the Board of SMART Recovery organizations in the U.K. and Australia.
Mark Ruth
Executive Director @SMART Recovery, USA
As Executive Director of SMART, Mark manages operations, fundraising, finances & IT. He works with a Board of Directors to achieve strategic initiatives, manage growth and the National Office staff, and SMART volunteers and treatment organizations & professionals. Ruth has non-profit leadership experience as a staff member, volunteer, and Board Member. Before SMART, Mark was ED of Western Reserve Counseling Service providing counseling to support various addictions including alcohol and SUD, family and parenting problems, couples’ relationship problems, domestic violence, sexual abuse, and other mental and behavioral health issues. Before WRCS, Ruth served as Development Director for Big Brothers Big Sisters of NE Ohio to expand donations and volunteer recruiting. Mark has extensive entrepreneurial experience in IT & management consulting, helping businesses & organizations to improve profitability, streamline operations, leverage technology, and achieve corporate objectives.
